OK so this is
becoming something of a habit (good or bad, who knows?), the last couple of
years I have listed the films I am looking most forward to in the coming year. I’ve
produced this list showing the top 21 (why 21? Because why not?) Films that fit
my loosest of lose criteria. Like always the list is in alphabetical order and
at the start of next year (if we survive), we can compare it against those that
make it into my top 10/21/?? List of the year. In case you are wondering from
last year’s list Blade Runner 2049, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, John Wick:
Chapter 2, Logan, Spider-Man: Homecoming, T2: Trainspotting, The Lego Batman
Movie, Thor: Ragnarok, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and Wonder
Woman made my top now Top 21 (There’s that pesky 21 again) film list of 2017.

From Eva DuVernay, the
director behind the excellent Selma and the equally excellent documentary 13th,
comes this fantasy adventure film based on the 1962 novel. It will be
interesting to see what DuVernay can do with the backing of a big studio and
with a big budget. Also I loved the last Sc-fi/Fantasy adventure film from
Disney (Tomorrowland if you are interested), so have high hopes for this.

This has been a
project that James Cameron had been attached to since at least the year 2000,
and having now tied himself to the 20 or so Avatar films he is going to make,
he has passed the film onto to Robert Rodriguez. Based on the manga Battle
Angel Alita (no idea why the name change), the story of a female cyborg found
at a dump by a cybermedic who fixes her up, only to find out she can’t remember
who she is, but she can totally kick ass.

I haven’t heard much about this science fantasy action horror film (yes that is how it is described on Wikipedia!), but the trailer looks good, is directed by the director of the fantastic Ex Machina, and has a great cast (Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac). So I’m sold.

I really liked the first Ant-Man, it was a good comedy heist film and Paul Rudd is super likable, and all the noise coming out about the sequel is very good. Evangeline Lilly will finally suit up as The Wasp, we will also see Michelle Pfeiffer as the original Wasp, and another addition to the cast, is the always good Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster (AKA Goliath).

This will be the
biggest team up of superheroes on the big screen. So of course this made the
list. We will see The Avengers (all of
the pre-Civil War team), Spider-man, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther,
The Winter Soldier and the Guardians of the Galaxy will all join together to battle
Thanos, his Black Order and his alien army, as he finally attempts to unite the
Infinity Stones in his Infinity Gauntlet and take over the universe (as any
good comic book villain should).

There have been 17 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Black Panther hits the cinema in February, however this film will surprisingly take us somewhere new (on Earth). Wakanda is an Iconic location in the Marvel comics, and should be the first example of Afrofuturism (yes I learned a new word, and now so have you, Thank You Nick Mason) on the big screen. Directed by the Ryan Coogler the man who bought us the great Fruitvale Station and Creed, and filled with another great ensemble cast we will see this year, this might give Avengers: Infinity War a run for its money as the best Marvel film of the year.

Yes I know this was on my list for last year; however it doesn’t get released here in the City of a hundred spires (Prague for you laymen and laywomen) until mid-January. I love Pixar, I have enjoyed most of their films so far (with the exception of the Cars Trilogy), and I love the idea of them doing a film looking at the Mexican traditions dealing with the Day of the Dead. Since Last year having seen the trailers has just made me want to see this even more than I did a year ago.

This looks like a
fun comedy with a great cast, Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are always good
to watch, as are the supporting cast which includes Jeffrey Wright, Danny

gathered together to play a murder mystery night, who get sucked into a real crime.

Yet another great ensemble this year, with Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Ben Foster, Stephen Lang and the always underrated Wes Studi, starring in this western that seen Christian Bale’s Captain Blocker, unhappily being forced to escort an Cheyenne war chief back to his tribal land, after having spent the years fighting in the Indian wars and seeing a lot of horrors involved with that first hand.

The Mission Impossible film series has been around for over 20 years now, and with the possible exception of maybe Mission Impossible 2 (I’ve not re-watched it since seeing it in the cinema) , they have all been very enjoyable to watch. Tom Cruise and his team will return to take on Henry Cavill’s glorious moustache, possibly their toughest test yet. (Fans of the DCEU/DCFU (or whatever the hell they are calling that film franchise, will know what I’m talking about)

I love a good heist film, and with the fantastic cast (Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter just for example) assembled for this film, definitely makes it a must watch for me in 2018.

Wreck-It Ralph was a very under rated film from 2012 and I am really looking forward to see where they go with the characters and the story. This might also have the most perfect voice cast that I have heard in any animated film, especially John C. Reilly’s Ralph and Sarah Silverman’s awesomely named Vanellope von Schweetz. The first film had a lot of classic video game characters, and this one promises to unite all the Disney Princess (including Princess Leia).

I love the book that this film is based on. It is full of references from my youth as well as somewhat engaging story. If the film can replicate even half the references and still keep the somewhat true to the story, then there is almost no way I won’t like it (I mean the acting could totally suck).

We have been
waiting for a Black Widow film for years now and finally we get one, only it’s
not Black Widow, it’s not set in the MCU and it doesn’t have Scarlett Johansson
in it. Instead it will be a Jennifer Lawrence in the lead as a Russian Spy, who
may be thinking about defecting to the CIA. Lawrence is a compelling actress
and can definitely cut it when it comes to action sequences.

2015’s Sicario was a fantastic look at the US War on drugs, the people who fight it and the lengths that they will go to while fight it. Where the first one was lead by Emily Blunt, this upcoming sequel will concentrate on the slightly enigmatic Alejandro from the first one, played excellently by Benicio del Toro. This may possibly not be for the faint of heart.

Guillermo del Toro is a true visionary genius, yet along with his particular aesthetic and amazing practical effects, del Toro also bring a great sensitivity to his films. Along with all this del Toro has Added the brilliant yet slightly underrated Sally Hawkins to his cast and putting her opposite Doug Jones an actor that can provide so much emotion through what seems like a ton of latex prosthetics, makes this dark fairy-tale a must watch.
Hopefully I will get to see all of these (of course I will) and you can too. Let me know if you disagree with any of my picks, or have something you think I should definitely have on my list, you will be wrong of course but I’ll still read you response and chuckle.
